One person e-mailed that ‘the earth moved, really,’ because it was such a good presentation!” Thanks, Carol!

(“Author Shares Views of Life Beyond 50”) http://www2.journalnow.com/entertainment/2011/jun/16/wsrel14-author-shares-views-of-life-beyond-age-50-ar-1124362/
Here is an excerpt:
Q: What advice do you have for writers who are over 50?
A: I'm going to give it in three parts again.
I think that we have important stories to tell. To hear someone who has actually been there talk about the Vietnam War makes it completely different from somebody writing about it who has researched it.
I think women's stories are very important because young women today don't understand what it was like from the 1950s to the 1970s. They may have read about it, but somewhere in their minds they probably pooh-pooh it because that's not the way life is now.
The other reason to write after 50 is for oneself. Writing for therapeutic reasons is really great therapy. Just giving vent is really useful, and it can be fun for somebody else to read, too.
One can pick any story or poem in the book and find something familiar but also new in its perspective. Usually I don't read much poetry, but the format of this book with a poem or two following a story just pulled me in and I enjoyed the poems as much as the stories. After reading several stories, I found myself checking to see if it was fiction or nonfiction; there was so much realism that it was hard to tell the difference. I think this is a wonderful book to read when you are at appointments because you can read short pieces and not feel interrupted when your turn comes for whatever reason you've been waiting. I also think all ages of readers would find something interesting and entertaining in this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars
Excellent Reading!, March 21, 2011
By
Margaret V. Nelson (Sanibel, FL United States) - See all my reviews

When Last on the Mountain: The View from Writers over 50 (Paperback)
When Last on the Mountain is a wonderful collection of writings. Some stories remind you of childhood experiences you hadn't recalled since they happened. Others rang so true that the reader feels there must be some truth in the fiction. Each story, essay and poem represent a feast of words. I found it a good book to read while traveling because I could pick it up and start anew.

Most Helpful First | Newest First
